Reciprocal Pairing

Image
In recent years, I've embraced a profound concept that unveils the deceptive illusions underlying societal divides, revealing them as mere constructs that confine us. Robin Wall Kimmerer captures this elegantly in Braiding Sweetgrass , particularly in her chapter on asters and goldenrod. She describes her fascination with these two flowers—vibrant purple and yellow—thriving side by side in the same field. Drawing on Goethe's insight that "colors diametrically opposed to each other... are those which reciprocally evoke each other in the eye," Kimmerer portrays them as a "reciprocal pair." At its core, "reciprocal" implies mutual existence: interchangeable, equivalent, and echoing one another. Etymologically, it once evoked a rhythmic back-and-forth motion, like a pendulum swinging between poles. Kimmerer illustrates this through a simple experiment: stare at a yellow object, then shift to a blank white surface, and its afterimage appears purple—a...

Ownership

Image
"Man has no property in man; neither has any generation a property in the generations which are to follow" - Thomas Paine, Rights of Man, Part First Every person on this planet has a set of values that they live by, even if they have not been defined. We are ruled by one or two, maybe a combination of a few, but they will determine how our lives are expressed.  When asked what their values are, most people will list "love" as number one and then rattle off the standard, trite responses without real examination of whether those values are apparent in the woven fabric of their life's spectrum. For me, I knew freedom was high on the list yet I hadn't realized how much until the last few years when put through the wringer by God. My spiritual wayfaring has centered specifically around the finding of that freedom. For most of my life, I felt confined, without air, smothered, watched, and owned. Yes, owned. It didn't become apparent until I gave myself to God...

A Dead Girl and a Sick Woman

Image
In the New Testament (Mark 5:21-43 & Luke 8:40-56), there's a seemingly simple story concerning a girl who has died and a woman who touched Jesus' robe for healing. On the surface, it's about receiving miraculous healing by having faith in Jesus. But, as I was reading this passage today, I realized some details in it that offer a more profound deliverance, for me at least.  The woman has been afflicted with an unending menstruation for twelve years at this point. Twelve years of being a woman of child-bearing age yet without the ability to conceive due to this abhorrence. On the other hand, we have a girl dying in the intro and dead upon arrival that happens to be twelve years of age. Dead when the woman's menses stopped.  What I realized about this story is that it's not just about two females but one. The fact that the story has been told as one, linked through Christ's actions, reveals the integrity of the two females' indivisibility. As Mark 4:12 sta...

Farming and Revolution

Image
" It was the Constitution that welded them together politically, legally, and economically,  but it was nature that provided a transcendent feeling of nationhood ." When I read the profound introduction to Andrea Wulf's Founding Gardeners , I couldn't help but find comparisons between the time in which Benjamin Franklin was constantly sending seeds back to America for the cultivation of a future independent nation and Washington uprooting all native British trees and shrubbery from his land to the homesteading and off-grid living explosion that's happened in the last 20 years. Yes, there's been talk originally of another civil war but, lately, more of a united movement of a quiet revolution that's happening on both sides of the aisle.  Pre-American Revolution was an ever-increasing, tension-building intensity between the British Empire and the colonists. Most of us were taught that the revolution was fueled by the amplified raising of taxes but, in reality...

Hair as Communication with the Divine

Image
I've never excelled at styling my hair. For most of my life, I left it long and hanging in whatever state it happened to be. There were a few times I had it cut short which required more styling finesse than I have been want to give. Only a handful of years was I willing to use styling products, and, for about ten years, I insisted on dyeing my hair, partly due to it graying and a few times for fun.  Generally, hair, as both secular and religious history calls it, is a woman's "crowning glory." I'm not sure what led me to my search, but I became interested in hair coverings for women according to the Bible. Why have so many religions or denominations required a head covering for women? That search led me to all things hair particularly when I found a Nazarite's vow seemed to be rather similar to the requirements for a woman's haircare.  First off, I've spent my entire life with the understanding that Nazarites were a separate religious group from bib...

Sweet Potatoes, Popeye, and the Almighty

Image
I was told a couple of nights ago that I would be asked to testify for the Lord the next day but the next day came and I didn't leave the house. I was completely anti-social that day. But, that night, I had a dream... I won't go into the length and breadth of the dream but I did testify for the Lord in such a random and quirky way that intriguingly tied yams to Popeye to the Almighty. Yep. You read that right.  As I stepped into this backroom of a house, there lay dozens of boxes filled with potatoes and yams (aka sweet potatoes). I asked the women congregated throughout the room if they knew how yams remind us of the Lord. In the old cartoon and movie (with Robin Williams), Popeye declares, quite frequently, "I yam what I yam." Now, anyone with any sense of biblical studies will know that the Lord tells Moses at one point "I am that I am." Some Bible versions may replace that  with who  or what  and that would be because the Hebrew word אֲשֶׁר ('ăšer) m...

The Parallelism between Narcissism and Schizophrenia

Image
In the beginning stages of learning the art of channeling Spirit, one may have an extended period of time in which they feel like they're going crazy and have no control over their own mind. This happened to me and I felt as if I was becoming schizophrenic. In my case, channeling does not come with imagery or voices, at least not overtly distinguishable from the internal dialogue of thought. For me, the "voice" is more of an automatic download; if an image accompanies it, it'll be a product of my mind's eye or imagination. In the period of time that felt schizophrenic, I couldn't gain control and so my fear kept growing. It wasn't until I realized that when I chose to place authority within, or with God, that the "voices" receded. I have learned to place my fear with God and trust in Him. This allows me the freedom of my mind and heart.  Since having experienced this perceived mental break, I've become somewhat fixated on the individual...

The God Script

Image
A while ago, the phrase "I'm recharging my God script" popped into my head. It was an apt descriptor as I was having trouble maintaining my energy by the end of each day. I've been working with understanding, feeling, seeing, and purifying the energy fields, chakras, and meridian lines without employing proper protections. I go out into public charged with energy and quickly become depleted until I wake the next morning feeling bruised and battered (I have learned since how to not only recharge my batteries but protect that energy so it maintains a steady vibration.) Whether you believe that it's a possibility of seeing energy, you should be able to sense it to an extent at the very least. We can feel when another person's depression or anger pulls us low along with them. We can feel the desire to be inert or when we get sick and understand the depletion of our energy. On a regular basis, we need to be vigilant about recharging our own God script. The God sc...
